I grew up surrounded by paintbrushes, books, musical scores, VHS tapes, and cameras. From an early age, creative processes have been my greatest passion. Writing and drawing help me try to understand the world around me, while through photography I formulate my own uncertainties. I do not believe I have the answers, and that is precisely what fascinates me about art and creative processes.
When I turned ten, I cried. “I will never again be an age with just one digit,” I told my mother. That year, I asked for a camera as a birthday present. At first, I used it to photograph my toys. Then my friends. Later, as an architecture student, I began to use it to imagine spaces. Several of my professors encouraged me to explore photography further, as did a close friend. Thanks to her, I got my first job as a professional architectural photographer.
My mother used to say that she did not like being photographed, and I followed in her footsteps, hiding behind the excuse that I was the one taking the pictures. I think that little girl who cried at the passing of time has gradually found, behind the lens, a place from which to contemplate it.
My photographic work—professional, personal, and as an educator—is permeated by reflection, pause, waiting, memory, and silence. I understand photography as a personal manifesto in defense of both collective and intimate memory: a way of pausing before that which is inevitably destined to disappear.
